A vibro sifter needs little maintenance, but the screen and seals are consumables and cleaning is critical in pharma and food plants. Use this checklist as a starting point and adapt it to your SOPs.
Always isolate electrical power before dismantling or cleaning the machine.
Before Each Batch
- Inspect the screen for tears, holes, loose mesh or damaged sealing.
- Check that the correct mesh is fitted for the product.
- Check clamps are tight and gaskets seated.
- Confirm outlets are connected to the right containers.
Cleaning Procedure (Product Changeover)
- Run the machine empty briefly to discharge residual material.
- Switch off and isolate power.
- Release clamps and remove the lid, frames and screens.
- Dry-clean loose powder with a vacuum or soft brush.
- Wash contact parts with water or an approved cleaning agent; use soft brushes โ never steel wool or carbon steel brushes on stainless steel.
- Rinse thoroughly, especially if chloride-containing cleaners are used.
- Dry all parts completely.
- Inspect the screen again, reassemble with gaskets and clamps.
- Record cleaning as required by your SOP.
Weekly / Monthly Checks
- Gaskets โ replace if hardened, cracked or flattened.
- Springs โ check for cracks or uneven height.
- Fasteners and motor mounting โ check tightness.
- Motor โ listen for unusual noise; check cable glands and earthing.
- Clamps โ check for wear.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Low output | Screen blinding, overfeeding, wrong weight setting | Clean screen, reduce feed, adjust weights |
| Oversize in fines | Torn screen or poor sealing | Replace screen / gasket |
| Excess noise | Loose clamp, fastener or worn spring | Tighten, replace springs |
| Machine walking on floor | Uneven floor, unlocked castors | Level and lock castors |

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should vibro sifter screens be replaced?
Replace whenever inspection shows tears, loose mesh or damaged sealing. Life depends on material abrasiveness and handling.
Can I use steel wool to clean the sifter?
No. Steel wool and carbon steel brushes can damage stainless steel and cause rust spots. Use soft brushes.
